For the past three years, this 8 1/2-hour training series has been the sole focus of our work. The production of the CITY OF SHELTER series has been a difficult personal and professional journey, but one that we wouldn't trade. Addressing a subject that we have personal experience in has been both uncomfortable and rewarding.
Parts of this series are graphic and disturbing, but we believe there is far more danger in sanitizing domestic violence. It is too easy for the professional who only sees one small aspect of domestic violence to dismiss its devastation. When we are no longer shocked by the ugliness and cruelty of domestic violence, it's probably time to find another line of work.
Our hope is that the CITY OF SHELTER documentary and accompanying manual will be used to launch productive training and discussion sessions. The 8 1/2-hour series may be used for continuing education credits in some disciplines. Your procedures and laws may vary from those presented, your opinions may vary from those presented, but a coordinated community response starts with communication -- often soul-searching communication -- between diverse, and sometimes divergent, members of the community.
We wish to thank the communities that have welcomed us into their courtrooms and council meetings. We especially thank the individuals who shared their personal stories with us in order to help others. We are grateful for their courage.
